CAHPSA Lobby Day 2009: LD09
Lobby Day 2009 (LD09), held on January
11-12, 2009 in Sacramento, CA, was our fourth annual lobbying event.
It continued the trend of getting bigger and better, featuring several "firsts":
- 404 health professional students made legislative visits.
- We made 117 legislative visits.
- We secured 21 co-authorships for the introduction of SB 810 on February 27, 2009
- 30 California campuses were represented!
- Sunday’s Training Day included two breakout sessions for students to meet with their specific legislative groups and plan their legislator visits.
- We researched the effectiveness of our training on attendees' knowledge, skills and attitudes, and we found significant imprvements in all measures in our Survey Research.

LD09 Survey: The Effect of LD09 on Students
This original Survey
was designed and conducted by Parker Duncan, CaPA Fellow; Farah Karipineni, MS2, UC Irvine and Nancy Anaya-Navarro, MS1, UC Irvine.
Methodology
We surveyed all participants in a pre-test/post-test format to better understand the effect of LD09 on their knowledge, skills and attitudes related to healthcare reform issues.
Of 404 participants, we collected 248 surveys -- a response rate of 63%.
Key Learning Points
- Students initially had low levels of knowledge and skill – but they were fast learners, showing statistically significant changes across all knowledge and skill items.
- Students who attended LD09 (a selection bias) already had strong attitudes about the importance of student participation in healthcare reform efforts. While those also changed significantly, as well, it was to a much smaller extent.
Available Materials
- Data: We have completed only preliminary review of the data, and we are happy to share it with all who are interested in conducting further analysis. If interested, download:
