“Universal Healthcare: The Affordable Care Act and Beyond”
Keynote speaker: Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, representing the 13th Assembly District and San Francisco in the California State Assembly
About the Conference
On October 13th 2012, the California Health Professional Student Alliance (CaHPSA) hosted their annual healthcare conference in Northern California on the UC San Francisco campus. Every year CaHPSA holds three major conferences to foster an environment of learning about the health care system, leadership training and growth of our efforts for a single-payer health care system. This years conference entitled, “Universal Healthcare: The Affordable Care Act and Beyond” underscored the need for additional reform in the wake of this landmark legislation. Students learned what advocates in California are doing in response to the nationwide healthcare crisis and received training on how to get involved in the struggle to provide guaranteed healthcare for all Californians
This conference attracted over 120 students from various health professions, different class standings and a diversity of campuses. CaHPSA leadership was extremely successful in delivering insightful presentations throughout the conference along with speakers who aid these efforts. CaHPSA leaders initiated the conference with some basic background information of national and state demographics and the California Universal Healthcare Acts history. Breakout sessions included topics like legislative advocacy, chapter development, and international health care system comparisons by expert speakers such as Dr. Claudia Chaufan, PNHP member. Our expert panel provided students with an understanding of their firsthand experience in the medical field from divergent perspectives such as intensive care unit nurse and California Nursing Association (CNA) member, DeAnn McEwen, General Internist/PNHP member, Dr. Alireza Rezapour, and dentist and philanthropist, Dr. Daniel Nam.
Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, representing the 13th Assembly District, a strong champion for change in California on key issues such as schools, healthcare, and civil rights, reminded students of the importance of legislative advocacy and the dire need to further health care reform to a publicly funded, privately delivered health care system – a single-payer system! Special thank you to all speakers, attendees and supporters for your continued support.
